Extra care housing
Extra Care Schemes offer purpose built housing in
which varying amounts of care and support can be offered; it is a
concept rather than a housing type. The old model of housing involved
residents moving from their home, potentially across supported homes,
residential homes, nursing homes and hospitals; the extra care scheme
has the potential for all those needs to be met without residents
leaving their home. Designed to accommodate people with a range of
needs, deteriorating general health should no longer be the sole
reason for leaving home.
The support provided by Extra Care Housing schemes
attempt to eliminate loneliness though the creation of a community,
and encouraging individuals to live independent lives within that
community. This process lessens social isolation. The site in
Gravesend will include a restaurant for residents to use with their
guests and visitors, a wellbeing and fitness suite and an internet
hub. Residents can expect to lead fulfilled lives with a maximum
level of independence in a safe and nurturing environment.
