Abbeyfield Joins the Happy List!

The Independent on Sunday newspaper recently published the ‘Happy List’, celebrating those Britons who have ‘given back, enhanced the lives of others and realised that in an acquisitive society there’s a crying need for values other than mere materialism’.

Richard Carr-GommWe were delighted to see that Richard Carr-Gomm, founder of The Abbeyfield  Society, was featured in this list of the top 100 Britons who have contributed to the happiness of the nation.

Richard started the Abbeyfield Society in 1956 and has inspired
thousands of volunteers to establish houses and care homes across the UK and in a further 13 countries world wide.

Today there are 7.500 volunteers, who each year, take time out to support Abbeyfield residents and staff and carry on Richard’s work in combating loneliness and isolation amongst older people.

Evensong at Rochester Cathedral

On Sunday 15th June, the Society held an Evensong event at Rochester Cathedral for its residents, relatives and supporters.  The day was enjoyed by all and raised £641.45.  Thank you to all who were involved in that day.

A day at the seaside

On Sunday 20th July, the residents from Drewery Drive visited the residents at Northwood Road in Tankerton and enjoyed tea together.  Everyone had a really good afternoon and this was thanks to the two Housekeepers, Lorna and Peggy, who thought of the idea and made all of the arrangements.

Thanksgiving Services

It is that time of year once again when we are holding our Thanksgiving Services in the residential homes.  A number have already taken place with the remainder booked.  Residents, relatives, staff and volunteers all come together to celebrate the good work that takes place and the lives of our residents who are no longer with us.

Quality

Over the last two months the Quality Department has carried out audits of our residential homes.  June saw the end of the Sickness and Absence Audit.  July has started with the Kitchen Audits in the residential homes and the sheltered houses.  When auditing the homes the residents have given praise for the excellent care they receive.

Free Range Foods

Free range eggs are now being used within the homes.  When visiting the homes the feedback from residents has been extremely positive.

Human Resources

We have set for ourselves a zero-tolerance approach to bullying and harassment. Our aim is to provide a just and fair environment for our residents, their relatives, friends and sponsors, our employees and agency workers, volunteers, visitors, contractors and everyone else in our Homes and Sheltered Houses.  Any instances of inappropriate or offensive language or behaviour, violence, unfair discrimination, bullying or harassment will be investigated and dealt with.   Every Home and Sheltered House now displays clear statements on this policy on Dignity and Respect for everyone to see.

Property

This has been an extremely busy time for us that has seen enormous benefit to all of our 17 homes.  Below is a snap-shot of our achievements all of which enhance the lives of our residents.

All residential homes have had new anti-slip flooring throughout.  This was a huge task ensuring the safety of the residents, staff and any visitors to the home whilst carpet was being taken up and the new flooring laid.  The new anti-slip flooring ensures any spillages are easy to clean and those residents who aren’t as nimble on their feet as they used to be are less likely to fall.

Connors House has seen replacement windows and doors across the home along with re-wiring and new decoration.  The transformation to the home has been amazing.  We are working with Tina Galloway at Connors House to make sure everything is finished in time for her conservatory and sensory garden opening celebrations on 11th September.

Electrical reports have been compiled for all the homes and we are now embarking on a major re-wiring programme across the Society.

Since the beginning of the year the Property team have progressed 1,728 jobs.
